It’s that time again! Time for NBA Summer League! This is a time for teams to develop existing talent & to scout players from around the world as they try to break into the league. This will be many players’ first experience as professionals, and others will be returning for yet another stint in familiar surroundings.
NBA Summer League is broken up into three events in three locations: Orlando, Florida (click here to view my article on Orlando); Salt Lake City, Utah; and Las Vegas, Nevada. In this article, I’ll be talking just about Salt Lake City. All NBA teams are represented in at least one location; some travel to multiple events. Those teams sometimes will have different rosters at each event. These teams are made up of recent draftees, NBA G-League team members, international players, & others who have earned a tryout. There is no guarantee that you will see any certain player during every game, or any game. This is for getting a good look at the skill level & the professionalism of each young man. It’s fast-paced & very competitive because many of these players are fighting for a career.
The schedules for the entirety of NBA Summer League have been released & can be found at the NBA Summer League website (click here). This year, multiple networks will broadcast games, including NBA-TV & the ESPN family of networks. Salt Lake City Summer League will be live broadcast only on NBA-TV. In the past, games have also been available for streaming via the NBA app, the ESPN app & on the NBA website, but I have never tried watching via those methods. Select games have been rerun on NBA-TV in the evening & overnight hours as well, regardless of original broadcast host.
Rosters have been released for Utah Summer League, so let’s take a look at which former University of Kentucky Wildcats we could see on the floor.
